Sensophy’s Inner Circle: Week #18

Talking Point #1: Confidence comes AFTER action

For the most part, confidence is the knowledge that you can handle something. It’s not fearlessness. It’s actually learned competence. Confidence comes from first being vulnerable enough to go ahead and do the things we think we can’t.

Remember the ‘get better’ mindset? Often we get stuck in the ‘be good’ mindset, which dictates that we should already be good at something before we give it a shot, but in actual fact, it’s all about the process. Confidence comes from experience, not the other way around.

Talking Point #2: Define success for yourself

Once again, we’re talking about that process. The process that comes *before* the stereotypical definition of success. What are we working towards? And are we actually enjoying the work we’re putting in? If not, is it worth it after all?

As George Leonard says…

We fail to realize that mastery is not about perfection. It’s about a process, a journey. The master is the one who stays on the path day after day, year after year. The master is the one who is willing to try, and fail, and try again, for as long as he or she lives.

To us, enjoyment is a big part of success. If we’re feeling good about what we’re doing, how can it not be a success? But success looks different to different people. What does it look like to you? *Why* are you doing what you’re doing?

Talking Point #3: “Me time” isn’t selfish

Sometimes, taking time for ourselves can feel like a needless, even selfish, task. We’re supposed to be of service to others, we’ve got to-do lists as long as our arms… How can we justify taking the time for rejuvenation?

Napping might seem like the last thing we should be doing, but it’s actually one of the best things we can do for our productivity and levels of service when we feel ourselves flagging. We’ve been conditioned to believe that plowing through is the way to get things done, but scheduling time for recovery as well as time for work is more important than we might realize for keeping motivation high and burnout low.
