Sensophy’s Inner Circle – Week 49

Big Idea #1: Overcoming Limiting Beliefs About Our Own Success

Sometimes fears can come up when we think about improving ourselves or our life in some way, such as through losing weight or earning more money. We might think that if we lose weight and achieve our ideal body, it will make other people feel badly about themselves or think about us differently. The same belief can come up about money, that if we become abundant, that others will judge us or feel worse about their situation.

How can we deal with this feeling when it comes up, and move forward freely and confidently in life to achieve our goals?

First of all, ask yourself: “What’s the worst case scenario, what’s the worst thing that could happen?”

Chances are, the worst case scenario has to do with the thoughts or reactions of another person. But who decides how you feel? You do. Is it in your control to decide what happens and how you feel? Absolutely.

Is it true that if you lose weight or earn more money, then you will feel more hurt? Absolutely not, unless you choose to feel this way.

We always have the choice to give power to whatever thoughts or beliefs come up for us. As long as we can notice these beliefs as they arise, we can consciously choose whether or not to accept them and give them power.

If this is not a belief you choose to accept, ask yourself:

Who would you be without this belief?

Are you willing to let go of this belief?

Are you open to playing with the new belief that by improving yourself, you will feel free, confident and will help uplift other people?

Big Idea #2: The Work by Byron Katie

In life there is reality, and then there’s our projection or interpretation of reality. We can thinkof this like a movie that’s being played by a projector onto a big screen. We have the movie on the screen, and the lens that the movie is being played through. If there is a piece of dust on the lens, you would see this big, annoying mark on the screen. You might try to scratch the screen to get it off, but of course this will never work because the problem is on the lens itself.

In our lives, we often think there is something wrong with the screen, or what is happening on the outside in our perceived realities. But the real work needs to happen on the lens, on the inside, with the way we interpret the world. We have to look at our beliefs and ask ourselves if they are really true. Constantly ask ourselves “is that really reality, or is this happening on the inside?”

The Work by Byron Katie is a series of questioning our beliefs to understand more about them. A belief is just a belief; it’s not “right” or “wrong.” It’s simply our perspective that we bring to the world. The purpose of a belief is to prove itself true. So we can ask ourselves, “what are the beliefs I have that aren’t helping me in life right now?”, and through this process we can often find freedom from harmful or unhelpful beliefs.

So when you have a belief come up that isn’t serving you, go through this process of 4 questions. Write down the answers and really spend time going deeply into them.

Question #1: Is it true?

Question #2: Is it really true?

Question #3: How do I feel when I believe this?

Question #4: Who would I be without this belief?

Big Idea #3: Diving Deeper into Beliefs

What if we already know that we’re dealing with beliefs instead of reality? Maybe we’re not fooled by this idea that our belief is our reality, and we know we have to look on the inside. It can still be difficult to overcome these beliefs anyway. How can we deal with this and move forward in the way we need to?

Think about something in your life that you want, but don’t currently have. For example, you might want more certainty in our life about what to do next. Once you’ve identified what it is that you want, find out what your life would be like and how you would feel if you had that. Then, ask yourself what is the next step that you’d love to take? And what stops you from making that choice?

You might know that achieving more certainty would make your life easier, but maybe what you’re really looking for is the ability to move forward anyway, even without knowing the future.

Here is where we find the gap between what you know and what you do. It stops being about knowing what you know, and it starts being about doing what you know. Walk the walk, and take action on the things that you consciously know will serve you.

The quality of our life is directly related to the quality of the questions we ask ourselves. We have the power to improve our lives by asking ourselves questions that serve us better. So let go of your old patterns of your old questions, and bring in more empowering questions to your life.
