Sensophy’s Inner Circle: Week #6

Yesterday, call #6 of Sensophy’s Inner Circle went down. Below, we’ve touched on our favorite talking points.

If you missed the live call, you can check out the MP3 recording in your own time.

Talking Point #1: Welcome to the revolution

How awesome is this? We’re leading a revolution! According to much of society, fame, money and status are where it’s at. If we don’t keep up with the Joneses, it’s as if there’s something wrong with us. So when we stand up and proclaim that we’re doing things differently, it’s pretty revolutionary.

Of course, it’s easy to get sucked into society’s expectations. But we know that, from a psychological standpoint, concentrating on our *intrinsic* motivations keeps us more grounded (even though our culture’s mostly set up to focus on the exact opposite!). Some of us may have ventured down the well-worn path and realized it’s not for us, or maybe we knew intuitively before we even took the first step that we needed to blaze our own trail. Either way, taking the road less traveled and being part of a revolution feels pretty freakin’ awesome.

Talking Point #2: Some people just won’t get it

Doing things differently and being revolutionary means that we’ll likely come up against some resistance. There’ll be naysayers and critics who simply won’t get our message or understand our path. The minute we decide that someone else’s way isn’t for us, that “someone” might get defensive. But that’s all it is; any backlash we face is more a reflection of someone else’s defensiveness than of anything we’re doing wrong.

Often, people might see our decision to live differently as a threat and a personal attack on them, and they may try to get validation for *their* way by criticizing or judging what we’re up to. It can be tempting to listen to their judgments and give in to the haters, but if we keep on keepin’ on, we’re likely to meet people whose views *are* in line with our own. (They’re out there. And the Inner Circle provides a great way of meeting some of them. Check it out!)

Talking Point #3: Do we know why we do what we do?

We’ve mentioned intrinsic motivations over extrinsic, but how do we figure out what those are exactly? The key question to help us is “why?” What’s the deeper why behind what we do? How do we most want to feel? What do we think we’d be able to do if we felt that way?

Having a goal is all well and good. But without that deeper why, anything we do is gonna fall short and feel empty.
