Now, for this week’s big ideas…

Big Idea #1: Whose Voice Is That?

Just because you have a thought – doesn’t mean that you ARE that thought. It can get really heavy when you get in the mindset that “I am my thoughts!” Because if that were true… every time we had a crazy thought, that would mean that we’re a crazy person!

In reality, we may have a voice in our head sometimes… but it’s not US. It comes from outside of us… maybe from someone else in our life… or maybe from a past belief we’ve held, or a voice from society or our family.

Pay attention to the wording of this voice in your head. Really look at what it’s saying!

A lot of times, the voice in our head is telling us that we “need” to do something. Look at this voice, and figure out where it’s really coming from. Why do you feel like you need to do this thing? Is there a deep desire of yours hidden in that voice that’s telling you what you “should” be doing?

If so, spend some time with this desire, and find the purpose behind it. If you feel like you “need” to be doing a certain thing, ask yourself if you really desire that thing – and why. What is having or doing this thing going to bring into your life? Shift your focus onto that purpose – and everything will soon begin to flow with much more ease.

Big Idea #2: Dealing With High Highs and Low Lows

The quickest way to have really high highs and low lows in life, is to make external events mean something about our worth as a person. (Hint: none of it really does!)

For example, are you tying up some event, activity or thing with your self-worth as a person? Does going on a certain trip or doing a particular thing mean that you’re courageous and strong? Does owning a certain type of car or brand of clothing make you worthy to fit in with society?

Meaning is completely subjective, it is a function of the human mind. When we start ascribing meaning to external things and make them about us, we’re going to experience a roller coaster of emotions – when we have or do that thing we feel good, and when we don’t – we feel terrible.

And remember that authenticity and truth are a moment-to-moment experience. What’s authentic for you right now, is different from what’s going to be authentic for you in 10 minutes or in 10 years. If your truth right now is one way, that’s you being authentic – regardless of what the expectations are from the outside world. In fact, being inauthentic would be clinging to some past notion of yourself, when it’s no longer real for you now.

Big Idea #3: What is Self-Sabotage?

There is no such thing as self-sabotage. It’s a social construction that’s been made up, that makes us think there’s something wrong with us. When something doesn’t go the way we want it to in life, it’s really easy to say “Oh, I’m just self-sabotaging.”  This concept tends to be a blanket that we hide under… preventing us from seeing what’s really going on.

So what really happens when we think we’re self-sabotaging? We’re really just afraid. We all have many different versions of ourselves inside – the 5-year old self, the 15-year old self, and so many others. Oftentimes, what we perceive as self-sabotage is just a fear coming up for our 5-year old self, that tells us that danger is arising. Once we can recognize this is happening, we no longer have to see this as self-sabotage – we can see it as simply a previous belief that’s no longer helpful for our current way of being.

Let’s connect!
