Sensophy’s Inner Circle: Week #11

Yo! We are up to our 11th call of Sensophy’s Inner Circle. Once again, you guys brought your A-game. You are awesome.

Below you’ll find some of our favorite talking points from this week’s call. If you missed it, don’t worry as you’ll be able to catch up with the MP3 recording at your leisure.

Talking Point #1: Start your day right

There’s generally a lot of talk in the online sphere about morning rituals. What’s the best way to start the day? How can we set ourselves up for success in the AM?

One of the most empowering things about taking ownership of our morning is the declaration we’re making about who’s actually in control. If we get up in the morning and immediately reach for The New York Times, we’re giving permission to mass media, pop culture, the government and the external world to dictate the content of our consciousness. But with a morning ritual, we’re being aware of what will actually set us up right and we’re taking deliberate steps to have control over what we consume.

The first thing to focus on, and we’ve talked about this a ton already, is our values. Once we know what’s important to us, then we can start narrowing down the ways we can honor those things at the start of each day. It might be exercise, nutrition, learning, or quiet time. Whatever it is, consistency is the key. And we might need to make some changes; getting up earlier in the morning and/or going to bed earlier at night will be worth it in service to what’s important.

Talking Point #2: What we do doesn’t define who we are

Making big life changes, such as leaving a soul-sucking job, can be scary. In our culture, we have a tendency to attach meaning to our jobs, and we become identified by what we do. So when we change what we do, it can feel like we’re losing a part of ourselves. But if something’s not working, we need to let it go. We won’t become who we can be until we let go of who we currently are. We talked a little more about this in week #9.

Talking Point #3: What about when we want to do something, but it kinda sucks?

Once we’ve figured out what our values are and what we need to do to honor them, it might still feel tough to put in the effort. Sometimes, things kinda suck. Often though, this comes down to impatience or an overestimation of what we can actually achieve. What we need to do is focus on consistency over intensity. When we set goals based on inspiration, we tend to overestimate how much we can get done in a short space of time. Instead of looking at the bigger picture, it’s often more helpful to break our actions down into the day-to-day. What can we do for ten minutes in the morning, even if it sucks at first, that’s gonna bring us closer to the person we wanna become?

It’s all about the journey. The long-term vision. We need to love the process, not just the destination.
